Officer Meeting, Aug 24

Hello! I’m Katie (also known as Spiffy), and I’m your secretary for this year! I’ll be posting notes after all club meetings and officer meetings, so you guys can keep up to date on what’s going on in the Fencing Club.

Today we had the first officer meeting of the year, where we discussed the following things:

1) Sports Clubs Business

Michelle went to the Sports Club Meeting, which has representatives from all of the Sports Clubs at UMW. They emphasized the importance of the CPR/First Aid policy, which requires that every club have 2 first aid certified members. We currently meet the minimum requirement, and are looking in to using club funds to get all of the officers CPR/First Aid trained as well. And, the Sports Clubs have put together a t-shirt for all of the clubs, with a phrase from each club (ours says “We Touche!”), and the profits from any we sell will go directly to the Fencing Club, so look for information about that soon!

2) A Series of Dates and Plans for the Year

Here’s some important upcoming events and dates for the year that we discussed!

Club Carnival is this Wednesday, (that’s tomorrow!), from 4pm to 6pm at Ball Circle. We’ll be doing a demonstration on the stage in addition to having a table, so come say hi! We’ll also have the forms that you need to practice with the team – the liability form, the code of conduct, and the team roster.

These forms MUST be turned in before you can practice!

There will be an opportunity to turn these in on Friday (6:30pm) and Sunday (3:30pm) in the Apartment Club House. These aren’t official Fencing Club meetings, but it’s a chance to get the paperwork turned in and say hello! Our first official meeting is Tuesday at 6:30pm.

Other upcoming events include:

Maryland Renaissance Faire! Also not official – we tag along with Renn Club. That’ll be on October 16, for anyone interested!

Alumni Tournament: April 16th, tentatively

UVA Scrimmage: September 19th or 24th, undecided. This is intended for newer fencers – older fencers can come along to referee or cheer on the new fencers!

Dark Horse Tournaments: The first will be on December 2nd, with two others next semester.

Newbie Tournament: No date yet, but it’ll be shortly after the UVA tournament

We also decided to have movie nights once a month in Virginia Parlor, starting, of course, with Princess Bride, so keep an eye out for details on those!  We discussed the possibility of having them as fundraisers, establishing that they’d have to be open to the general public, and we’d have to see about copyright requirements.

Other possible events: The VIWFA tournament (Last year we only went to the women’s; this year, we want to go to both the men’s and women’s, which would mean making it an overnight!) and a clean-up of the Ampitheater as a kind of community service project.

Fencing dinners (which aren’t official club activities, just casual gatherings for dinner on practice days) will be before practice (around 5pm) on Tuesdays and Fridays, and after practice on Sundays. Feel free to join us for noms!
Goodness, that was a long post! I promise most of them will be shorter as our meetings become less planning and more stabbing things. Looking forward to seeing everyone!
