Summer Salutations, and welcome back to school!

(If you got the email, this is mostly the same information.)

Our first gatherings of the year will just be general hang outs where we will watch movies and play games and socialize… and fill out forms. These will take place at normal practice times Friday and Sunday August 27 and 29. Location TBA.

Practice Times: Tuesdays and Fridays 6:30-8 PM, Sundays 3:30-5 PM. First official practice of the year will be Tuesday August 31st. You must have three forms filled out to participate: 1) Liability Form, 2) Student Code of Conduct Form, 3) Club Roster signed with all information filled in. Links to the first two are provided on the club blog, and the roster will be available at Club Carnival. Dinners will still be in the Nest. Feel free to join us before practice Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 PM, and immediately after practice on Sundays.

Meet the Leaders BBQ: Mon Aug 23, Ball Circle, 4-6 PM, free food and a chance to meet some club officers and hang out.

Club Carnival: Wed Aug 25, 4-6 PM, Ball Circle (Rain Location – Great Hall) – Feel free to stop by, wave a sword around, and recruit some new fencers for this year. The Club Roster and printed copies of the required forms for participation will also be available.

Fall Scrimmage: Sun Sept 19th or 26th, most likely all day event, UVA – The dates are still being decided, but this tournament is geared towards newer fencers (if you just learned how to fence last year, you are welcome to participate). Veteran fencers (2+ years experience) are invited to direct bouts.

This year we will be ordering a number of printed things. The big order will be Caution Death track jackets. Jackets tend to cost about $40. The price will vary depending on how many jackets we order. The trend is the more jackets ordered means the less they cost, and the less ordered, the more they cost. If you or someone you know are interested, speak up so we can start getting head counts and price estimates.

I am sure many of you noticed that we did not have t-shirts printed last year. Instead, we will be printing them at the start of this year. Again, respond with your interest in buying a t-shirt so we can finalize a price. If there are any takers, we would also like to order more Caution Death patches, or perhaps even design a new patch.

Lastly, the Fencing Club can always use more people who are CPR/First Aid or Van Certified. If you are already CPR/First Aid certified or would like to be, and would like to be listed as such for the Fencing Club, please speak up so that I can give you more information. If you would like to be certified to drive school vans for Fencing Club events that involve road trips, you can contact Officer John Adami at jadami@umw.edu or 540-654-1632. More information about the class is linked at the start of this paragraph.

This concludes your club president’s wordy missive. I look forward to seeing you back at UMW!
